White Shark Projects Recycle Swop Shop

Established in 2007, the Recycle Swop Shop is an award-winning community programme based in **Masakhane**, a neighbourhood in Gansbaai whose name means **”We Build Together.”** Every Tuesday during the school term, children and their families come together to exchange recyclable waste for points, creating a cleaner environment while earning essential everyday items.

Children collect plastic, paper, cardboard, glass and cans from their homes, schools and surrounding community. The recyclables are weighed and converted into points, which can be exchanged for school stationery, books, educational resources, toiletries, clothing, toys and other essential items. Every child who attends also receives a warm cup of soup, ensuring they leave with both practical support and encouragement.

The Recycle Swop Shop is also home to our **Sanitary Dignity Project**, which supports adolescent girls as they reach puberty. Through the provision of sanitary products, education and a safe, supportive environment, the programme helps ensure that girls can continue attending school with confidence and dignity. It also creates opportunities for them to connect with trusted female mentors and peers, encouraging open conversations around health, wellbeing and personal development.

More than a recycling initiative, the Recycle Swop Shop has grown into a true community hub. It teaches environmental responsibility, personal accountability and the value of giving back, while providing practical support that strengthens families and empowers young people. By bringing together volunteers, donors and local partners, the programme creates opportunities that extend far beyond recycling.

For almost two decades, the programme has helped divert thousands of kilograms of recyclable waste from landfill while providing direct support to local families. Through the dedication of volunteers, partners and supporters, the Recycle Swop Shop continues to demonstrate that caring for people and caring for the environment go hand in hand—building a cleaner, stronger and more hopeful future for the next generation.
